We know that many people are feeling the pinch at the moment, but for some people this isn’t only money related but also space related. With the costs of everything being so high right now, you may not be able to afford to move home or even to extend your home… or could you?
House extensions don’t have to be made from bricks and mortar, we should know, we fit house extensions! Only our house extensions are built from Nordic spruce logs, don’t take weeks to install and are a fraction of the price of a traditional house extension.
Planning Permission.
Our most frequently asked question is ‘do I need to go through planning permission to have this type of building?’ Simply put, no, most of the time you don’t.
A traditional house extension, more often than not, requires you to go through planning permission and has building regulations. Whereas a log cabin often falls under permitted development and does not require the same building regulations. They can, however, still be attached to your home.
Building Duration.
With house extensions, there are many stages to your build such as laying foundations, brick laying, electrical work, plastering, joinery and all of this is before any painting and decorating work happens, which can take weeks…
Or with a log cabin, depending on the size of the building, we are usually on site for only three or four days and to top it all off, there’s not a spec of concrete or dust in site! So as far as disruption to your daily life goes, a log cabin installation causes minimal fuss.
Cost.
If everything else that we have highlighted doesn’t make you think that a log cabin extension is better than a traditional extension, this factor definitely will! A log cabin extension is a fraction of the cost of a traditional house extension and doesn’t come with the hidden and unexpected costs.
In 2025, the average starting cost of a single-storey extension was £30,000 which is between £1800 - £3000 per square meter. This does not include costings of professional fees, such as an architect or planning consultant fees.
By comparison, the average cost of a log cabin is much lower at around £600 per square meter. Additionally, most of the time this process doesn’t require any other professional fees as planning is often not needed and at Summerhouses Unlimited, we take care of everything for you, from rough design to professional plans, base, insulation and cabin installation.
