GUIDE TO TREATING YOUR SUMMERHOUSE

Now that you have had your summerhouse installed you will need to paint it. This is a service that we can provide and should you be interested in this please do let us know by emailing info@summerhousesunlimited.co.uk

The logs used on your cabin are Norwegian Spruce and come untreated. Painting your cabin within a short time of it being installed is very important, not only to meet the manufacturers guidelines in their warranty document but also to preserve your cabin.

We recommend Sadolin products for your cabin as in our experience they do an amazing job on sealing the wood of your building. The advantage of their Superdec range is that once you have painted three coats you will not need to paint again for 10 years apart from a little touching up. Sadolin Superdec comes in a large array of colours and can also be colour matched for you at no extra cost. We can supply this paint for you and are very competitive so if you would like a quote please let us know.

If you would prefer to use a wood stain on the exterior of your cabin then once again we would recommend Sadolin. Although you will need to re-stain more often than every 10 years they are still excellent products.

The inside of your cabin also needs to be treated and we tend to recommend a clear Sadolin Polyurethane product which seals the wood but leaves a natural wood finish so you can experience the lovely feeling of being in a log cabin. The advantage of doing this initially is that it offers protection but if you get bored you can paint over this with a Sadolin Superdec colour at any point in the future. They do a product especially for floors. Even if you are putting a floor covering down such as vinyl or carpet you should still do at least one coat on the floor and more than one if you are leaving the floor with no covering.

If you choose to paint your own cabin you need to ensure that you paint right to the edge of every log so that no untreated wood is exposed to the elements. This involves taking the trims off and painting both sides of those and the log underneath. This needs to be done inside and out.

It is important to get into the little gaps by the log ears and suggest using a small brush for this. We have found an excellent brush available from Screwfix which is ideal for this.
